The Rocca

The Rocca at night

The exclusive La Rocca Buitoni, located in the hilltop village of Paciano on the Umbrian - Tuscan border, can sleep a total of 11 to 15 people. The house dates back to the 15th century and features a defence tower, vaulted ceilings, its private chapel with 17th century frescos, and endless views across the Umbrian border into Tuscany. It is furnished with first class antiques, renaissance paintings and Persian carpets. A welcome dinner and daily maid service are included in the price. The Rocca consists of 5 bedrooms, three bathrooms, a large living room with a private chapel, a kitchen, and several furnished halls. An additional two bedrooms and bathrooms can be added on demand. It is spread over four floors, and across the street, you have access to a half-acre garden. The price includes daily maid service, and a welcome dinner for the whole party will be offered the day of your arrival. If you like what you eat, hands on courses in the Umbrian and Tuscan art of cooking are held by Luigi in the kitchen of his restaurant. Other restaurants, shop, bars and facilities are right round the corner. Going up a flight of stairs, one reaches the first bedroom with its private bathroom. This room, once used to store ammunition, is located directly above the town entrance and has three single beds. Going up another flight of stairs, one enters the bottom floor of the defence tower. It is today the living room. Details include large French windows with views over the countryside and the lake Trasimeno valley, and in-between them, a majestic fireplace regularly used in the winter months. A hand cast iron chandelier hangs from an amazing red brick vaulted ceiling. The 15th century stones in the walls are still visible, as are red brick arches and niches in the walls. The antique dining table seats 8 people, but extra chairs can be taken down from the kitchen to seat larger groups. Renaissance still life paintings hang on the wall, and are complemented by ceramics from Deruta. Other antiques, from furniture to decorative artefacts, and Persian carpets complement the architecture in creating an atmosphere hard to describe in words. In conjunction to the living room is a private chapel covered with 17th century frescos. The kitchen is also found on this floor. It is complete of all necessary equipment, including a gas stove, oven, microwave and the mandatory espresso machine. All the utensils needed to cook and serve food for up to 16 people are included. The kitchen is furnished with a smaller dining table, suitable for breakfast, quick lunches and snacks. Going up another flight of stairs is the second tower room located right above the living room. It is the master bedroom, whose dominant feature is its raised double bed. The room is furnished with antique sofas, tables and cupboards, all topped with a grand piano. The windows give way to a magnificent view over the Trasimeno Lake and the Tuscan border. The ceiling and the walls are covered with frescos from the turn of the century. Some of the frescos depict pillars, while the medallions found in the vaulted ceiling is most likely the first sight you will see when waking up in the morning. Other frescos depict local landscape scenes. The master bedroom shares the bathroom with another bedroom. This bedroom is furnished with a double bed and cupboards. From the window, you see the roof tops of Paciano. The location of this room, placed on top of one of the one of the village entrances, made this one of the village's strategic defence post during its numerous wars and conquest attempts. On the other side of the stairway, there are two more bedrooms separated by a wide hall furnished with chairs and a breakfast table. Even these rooms contain a double bed, and share a bathroom with shower. All the furniture is original from the house, and tastefully fits in. There is a half-acre garden located right outside the town walls, by the house. It has outdoor furniture, including a mandatory hammock. The garden is shared with the guests of the inn, but they are rarely there as there is another outdoor area connected directly to the Inn they use instead. For large groups or groups who want single rooms, two additional double rooms with private bathrooms can be rented in conjunction to the apartment. Access to them would be through a door next to the kitchen. It is usually kept locked, but by opening it up and locking the door towards the Inn, these two rooms become part of the Rocca. Please note that these rooms have to be requested separately. Contact us to receive the URL of our website, where we have detailed descriptions of the Rocca Buitoni and plenty of pictures alongside a detailed description of the town it is located in. The price includes daily maid service in bedrooms and bathrooms, and a welcome dinner.
Notes:

Paciano is a small hill top town retaining its appearance as a medieval castle. Its main source of income is olive oil, as tourism has not caught on. You are thus guaranteed peace, tranquillity, exquisite views over the Lake Trasimeno valley and an excellent location off the beaten track. Perfect to visit other hill top towns in Umbria and Tuscany. They include Assisi, Arezzo, Orvieto, Cortona, Siena, Todi, and many, many more. Or how about a day trip to Rome or Florence? Aside from these towns and cities however there are even more anonymous ones offering restaurants, markets, wineries, walks, churches, and other sights not included in the major guidebooks. Swimming is available in the Lake Trasimeno, at a 10 minute drive, and trekking maps are found scattered in the area. Umbria is a region steeped in history and art, whose cuisine is as rich as its culture and whose wine rivals that of Tuscany. With a little sense of adventure and curiosity you will be rewarded with unforgettable experiences and wonderful memories, as its inhabitants are sure to welcome you to The Green Heart of Italy.
